The Rirratjingu Ceremonial Program supports and strengthens Yolŋu ceremony and Aboriginal cultural practices across North East Arnhem Land, ensuring these traditions remain active, respected and embedded in everyday community life.

Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation (RAC) recognises that ceremony is central to Yolŋu culture, identity and connection to country. It is through ceremony that cultural knowledge is shared, responsibilities are understood, and relationships between people, land and ancestors are maintained.

Through the Rirratjingu Ceremonial Program, RAC ensures that traditional ceremony in Arnhem Land continues to be practiced, protected and passed on to future generations so that it remains at the heart of Yolŋu life.

The Importance of Yolŋu Ceremony

Yolŋu ceremony, often referred to as buŋgul, is one of the most important expressions of Indigenous culture in Arnhem Land.

These Aboriginal ceremonies carry:

  • cultural law and responsibility
  • ancestral knowledge and songlines
  • connection to land, sea and sky
  • kinship relationships

For over 55,000 years, Yolŋu cultural practices have been maintained through ceremony. Today, the Rirratjingu Ceremonial Program plays a key role in keeping Yolŋu ceremony strong across Arnhem Land.
